ViparSpectra XS 1500 Review

The ViparSpectra XS 1500 is an excellent 2’ x 2’ grow light. It is well-built, easy to use, generates an excellent distribution of light and has elite efficiency. The XS series feature Samsung LM301b diodes and a Mean Well driver. The price is almost unbelievable. The XS-1500 is less than $0.50 per micromole with our amazon discount code (20% off on Amazon with code: XS1500Coco)! It is a great choice for 2’ x 2’ grow spaces.

The ViparSpectra XS series is an upgrade to the popular P-Series fixtures. Both model lines are quantum board style fixtures with ribbed aluminum heat sinks. They both feature a convenient dimmer on the side of the fixture. I tested the P-1500 a couple months ago and I liked the dimmer and the size of it, so I kept it for use with seedlings. I just ran my first set of seedlings through with it and both the plants and I loved it.

Both the XS series and the P series are full spectrum LEDs with supplemental 660nm Red. However, the XS-series features upgraded chips and driver. The Samsung LM301b diodes and the Mean Well driver allow the XS-1500 to realize better efficiency and produce a superior PAR map to the P-1500. In addition, the XS series features a silver finish, which looks much better than the green on the P-series. The XS-1500 looks, feels, and performs like a professional light.

In my 2’ x 2’ PAR test, the ViparSpectra XS-1500 produced an average PPFD of 776.9 µmol/m2, which is excellent. The distribution of density is also great. As you can see in the PAR map, the lowest PPFD value was 630 µmol/m2. The XS-1500 covers the four square feet easily, with an even distribution of high density light.

The ViparSpectra XS-1500 produced a Usable PPF of 279.7 µmol. This is higher than our target Usable PPF for four square feet, which means you will fully light a 2’ x 2’ space with one XS-1500. During the test I measured a power draw of 153 watts (at 120v). This gives the XS-1500 an elite Usable Photon Efficiency of 1.83 µmol/w.

There are many things to like about the XS series and the XS-1500. I love the dimmer. It tested very accurately and is really convenient for starting seedlings. It is a sleek little fixture that is easy to plug and play. The heat sink works effectively, and I do not expect heat will be a big concern. The hottest temperature that I recorded was on the heat sink at 59.2 c (138.6 f).

The XS-1500 is a pretty small light. If you have a large grow space, then I think there are better options. However, if you are looking for a small fixture – either for a small space or for raising your seedlings – the ViparSpectra XS-1500 is an almost unbeatable deal. If you are trying to start small on a budget, getting one of these lights is a great plan. You can add additional units as your budget permits and end up with a high efficiency array.

The Viparspectra XS-1500 is among our top picks for a 2’ x 2’ grow space.
