Migro Aray 4 240w Full Spectrum Review

The new Migro Aray 4 is an elegant, high performance fixture. It is among the most efficient LED grow lights on the market. It delivers an even spread of high-density light which is perfect for indoor cannabis. It features quality components, a thoughtful design and a bargain price. I am impressed.

The Migro Aray 4 is a bar array style LED grow light. It is designed to cover a 120 x 60cm (4’ x 2’) grow space. It consists of 4 LED bars, which are connected by their cables, and spacers, which slide into groves on the LED bars. It is easy to assemble, light weight to move around and it looks great.

I tested the “Full Spectrum” version of this light, which is the base model. It features high efficiency LumiLEDs or Samsung LM301b Diodes. Like all the Migro Aray fixtures, it has a high efficiency dimmable Migro Driver. There is plenty of cable which allows you to easily locate the driver outside the grow space. The simple design with quality components creates a very stylish fixture.

I previously collaborated with Shane Torpey, the owner of Migro Light to develop our grow light testing protocol. Shane has been testing lights from various manufacturers for years and he has incorporated the knowledge he has gained into the design of this fixture. I was not surprised that the Migro Aray 4 performed very well in my tests.

The Migro Aray 4 excels in the two most important criteria for grow lights: (1) it is very efficient at converting electricity into usable light and (2) it delivers an even distribution of high-density light to the entire coverage area. The combination of these attributes makes it a truly remarkable fixture. The Migro Aray 4 leads its class as the most efficient light to generate optimal 120 x 60cm (4’ x 2’) canopy coverage. If you want to maximize efficiency without sacrificing light quality or density, the Migro Aray is made for you.

In my official test, the Migro Aray 4 produced an exceptional PAR map. In a 120 x 60cm (4’ x 2’) test area, I hung the Migro Aray at 16.5cm above the sensor. The spread of light was even and excellent. The maximum PPFD in the center was 1000 µmol/m2. The lowest PPFD was near a corner with 573 µmol/m2. The average PPFD was 713.7 µmol/m2, which means the Migro Aray 4 Full Spectrum delivered a Usable PPF of 513.8 µmol. I recorded a power draw of 242 watts (@120v) for a Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.12.

Migro Lighting deserves praise for being the only grow light company to publish Usable PPF and Photon Efficiency data. Most companies publish inflated calculated values. The good companies publish total PPF data. Migro Lighting is alone in publishing the data that matters most to us as growers, Usable PPF.

The Usable PPF and photon efficiency data that I recorded agrees with the published data on the Migro Lighting website. Migro publishes a Usable PPF of 518 µmol. In my test I measured 513.8, which is within 1%. Shane from Migro tested it using 240v current and measured a power draw of 235 watts. In his test, 518 µmol divided by 235 watts produced a Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.20 µmol/w. I measured the Migro Aray 4 using 120v current and measured a power draw of 242 watts. In my test, 513.8 µmol divided by 242 watts produced a Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.12 µmol/w.

The Migro Aray 4 that I tested is the entry level “Full Spectrum” model. Migro also produces an upgraded “Full Spectrum + Red” which is even more efficient. I am waiting to test the latest version of the upgraded model and will add that report soon.

The Migro Aray 4 “Full Spectrum” model is a professional grade fixture, but it has an entry level price. It retails for only $309 and we have a 5% discount code which brings the cost down under $295. Use code: Drcoco* on Migrolight.com. With a Usable PPF of 513.8 µmol, the Migro Aray 4 has a cost efficiency of only $0.57/ µmol. This price beats all other fixtures in its class. It is an excellent deal.

The Migro Aray 4 is designed to be efficient and to spread the light evenly. It physically distributes the light with the array design, which allows a low hanging height. The low hanging height helps to maximize the Usable PPF and Photon Efficiency.

The optimal hanging height for the Migro Aray 4 is only 16.5cm (6.5”) above the canopy. The low hanging height is a huge benefit when vertical space is tight in your grow area. However, I know that some growers may wonder how to manage that hanging height with rapidly growing plants. To help answer this question, I ran a second PAR test.

I raised the Migro Aray 4 up to 25cm (10in). At this hanging height, plants would have about 9cm (4”) to grow. I was impressed with the performance in this raised test. The Maximum PPFD fell to 805 µmol/m2, but the lowest PPFD went up to 600 µmol/m2. At the higher hanging height, the distribution is improved and the Usable PPF only fell slightly. At 16.5cm the Usable PPF was 513.8 µmol. At 25cm the Migro Aray 4 produced a Usable PPF of 493.6 µmol.

For practical purposes, this means that I would set the Migro Aray 4 at a hanging height of 25cm during vegetative growth. I would allow the plants to grow to be within 17cm and then adjust the fixture back to 25cm. Once the plants settle into their flowering period and are no longer growing, I would dial in the hanging height to be closer to the minimum 16.5 cm.

The Migro Aray 4 is dimmable with a knob located on the driver. I tested the dimmer and it was reasonably accurate. It ran strong at the top of the dimming range and a little weak at the bottom. The dimmer would be most appropriately used during the seedling stage. I would start sprouts or clones under the Migro Aray at a hanging height of 25cm and a dimmer setting of 25%. I would ramp the dimmer up during the seedling stage and continue at 25cm and 100% power through the vegetation period as I described above.

I am quite impressed with what Migro has been able to do with this fixture. I knew it would be efficient, but I worried it would be less forgiving than it is. This light is efficient at 16.5cm and it is efficient at 25cm. It blankets the canopy with high density light at both hanging heights. It draws only 240 watts and it beautifully covers the 8 square foot space. It is really an elegant and stylish design that will look good over any garden. The price makes the Migro Aray almost too good to be true. $0.57/ µmol is impressive. I give the Migro Aray 4 a top recommendation.

Full disclosure: I previously collaborated with Shane Torpey, the owner of Migro Light as we developed our grow light calculator and grow light testing protocol. I conducted this test and review with the same standards that I use to evaluate all grow lights.
