Mars Hydro FC-6500 Review

The Mars Hydro FC 6500 is a sleek and elegant fixture with truly exceptional performance. I am impressed with the efficiency, coverage, and the design. The FC-6500 is the best fixture that Mars Hydro has produced, and it is among the best fixtures on the market for 5’ x 5’ coverage.

I previously tested the Mars Hydro FC-3000, which is the smallest fixture in the FC-series. It tested very well for 3’ x 3’ coverage. Mars Hydro also makes an FC-4800 which should be ideal for 4’ x 4’ coverage. The FC-6500 is the largest fixture in the FC-series.

The FC series has sleek thin aluminum ribbed LED bars connected to aluminum frame pieces. The larger FC-4800 and FC-6500 fold, which is a feature to accommodate shipping and storage. They are sturdy yet lightweight. Many fixtures for 5’ x 5’ coverage are heavy and bulky. The FC-6500 is comparatively light. Despite the light weight, it feels solid and well made. It is easy to unfold and it is not impossible to carry alone.

The FC-6500 boasts 3,144 top-of-the-line diodes. The full spectrum diodes are the extremely popular Samsung LM301b’s. The FC series also features the Osram 660 nanometer diodes. This is a winning combination that has come to dominate the industry. The diode quantity and quality on the FC-6500 are really quite high, which certainly contribute to its superior performance.

The Mars Hydro FC-6500 performed significantly better than I expected. I assumed that it would be slightly more efficient than the smaller FC-3000, which I measured at Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.07 µmol/w. The FC-6500 blows that and many competitors away. In my official test, the Mars Hydro FC-6500 recorded a Usable Photon Efficiency of 2.38 µmol/w, which is among the industry leaders. I am really impressed with this fixture – and with how far Mars Hydro has come.

I ran two PAR tests with the FC-6500 in a 150 x 150cm (5’ x 5’) test area. The official test was at a hanging height of 41.5cm (16.5in). Later I raised the FC-6500 to 53cm (21”) and ran a second test. During both tests, I measured a power draw of 621 watts.

At 41.5cm (16.5in) above the canopy, the Mars Hydro FC-6500 had a maximum PPFD of 1000 µmol/m2 and an average PPFD of 656.8 µmol/m2. The distribution of light across the canopy is decent, but density in the corners and along one edge is below the target threshold of 500 µmol/m2. At the higher hanging height of 53cm (21”), the average PPFD is slightly lower at 636.1 µmol/m2. However, the distribution is much more even, and the corner and edge values are higher. As you can see below, The FC-6500 produces a great PAR map at both heights.

I tested the FC-6500 with the driver detached. It is possible to mount the driver on top of the LED bars, but they also provide plenty of cable, which allows you to position it elsewhere. The fixture itself runs pretty cool. The hottest temperature on the LED bars was 39.9c (103.8f). The Inventronics driver ran slightly hotter at 53.4c (128.1f).

I ran a dimming test at the official hanging height. As you can see in the graphic below, the dimmer is accurate and consistent.

The FC-6500 is a top-quality fixture with excellent performance, which can light up a 5’ x 5’ grow space.
