- Seeds: Humboldt Seed Co Trainwreck
- Tent: Gorilla Grow Tent 2x2
- Light: Mars Hydro FC3000
- Seedling/Early veg light: Maxsisun MF1000
- Method: Scrog topped once
Hyped for this challenge! I chose Misfits as I will be topping and scrogging this one, as well as Humboldt Seed Co because genetics are very important to me and they are top of the line. Their Trainwreck seeds are one of their most stable and produce identical plants, and this is the official legendary Arcata cut. I am excited to try this as I have only had official Trainwreck once and for me it is such a perfect high, an uplifting sativa yet it’s hybrid genetics give it nice anti anxiety and chill properties as well.
This is the description from their website and since this is only my 2nd grow in a short tent and scrogging for the first time it fits perfect with what I’m doing:
“Trainwreck is a vigorous plant that has incredible production. It has an extremely wide growth pattern which makes this strain ideal for the grower with height limitations. It has a huge production of lime green strong smelling buds with incredible mold resistant and a low maintenance plant structure. It gets its sweet turpentine smell from high levels of Terpinolene which has reported an anti-microbial and strong tranquilizing effects.”
Short wide growth pattern ✔️
Huge yielder✔️
Anti microbial mold resistance✔️
Heavy hitting potency strain✔️
Official strain genetics✔️
I’m sold!
*I may have to flip late due to my current grow, if this disqualifies me from the prizes that’s ok I will still grow with everyone!
Sorry for the dormancy but I am currently soaking my seeds right now.
I wanted to take a week off with nothing to do after I just ended my last grow, but now I am ready to go with an auto watering system this time! On a side note, my other first grow turned out amazing.
Transplanting tonight. Got rid of one to manage rh easier.
After soaking the seeds for the two on the right, I planted them straight into the jiffy pellet instead of the paper towel method. Turned out beautifully and took the same amount of time as the others. Will do this from now on. Much easier than messing with a fragile root.
And then there were 2.
Transplant was successful. No signs of shock, in fact it looks like they were even more invigorated after the pot up.
Out of the 4 seedlings I noticed 3 had the exact same plant structure, and one had shorter, fatter leaves. I saw a youtube video by Humboldt seeds talking about this Trainwreck and they said it will produce mostly the same plant but sometimes one slightly different pheno. Not sure how much variation there is at the seedling stage but I chose 2 of the 3 that looked exactly the same assuming that is the intended pheno.
Keeping 2 plants until the final pot up to further choose the best looking one. One benefit of only growing one plant is you get to have the pick of the litter. The hunger games continue.
Final pot up went flawlessly. 24 hours later and this is how they look. I will be topping after this post and then the real plant training challenge starts.
Set up the new Gorilla tent. It really is a big difference in quality. The extra half foot allowed me to install the filter and ducting on the inside along with a silencer. It runs so smooth and quiet! So much less ducting than running it outside which = more CFMs. That with the auto water system I will be installing will make this the perfect little compact grow chamber. SO much easier this go around. I also switched to Canna coco and there is exponentially better drainage/aeration compared to the Cyco Pearl I used last grow. This strain has also been a pleasure. Loving this grow so far!
Topping went great. Today I trained her main branches flat and switched to late veg nutes. Then in the next day or two I will introduce the trellis net, new light, and auto water. I like introducing changes slowly.
Installed the trellis net and auto water system yesterday. My goal for this challenge is to keep the canopy as low and horizontal as possible. The net is only about 6 inches above the coco.
Today I have been dialing in the amount of flow/time needed to produce the correct amount of run off. 60 seconds with a slow and steady drip seems to do the trick.
Edit: had to switch to about 17 seconds of a stronger stream as the slower pressure wasn’t allowing all of the holes to drip water out making for less coverage.
Been training the main branches every day using a combo of the net and plant ties to ensure they grow nice and flat. Tucking the newer branches as they start to grow.
Humboldt was right about this being a bushy plant with wide structure. Just trained again right before these pics.
Got some yellowing on the leaves because I was underfeeding her. I was giving the recommended 1250EC but run off dropped to 700EC. So I have steadily upped it to 1400EC and run off is finally rising. She likes a lot of nutes.
Ready to flip to flower. Probably in the next day or two.
Just did some training so she is looking a little gnarly in the pics. Also did some light pruning as she is reaally bushy.
I wasn’t sure if I would be able to keep the canopy flat without raising the net, but using plant ties along with the net is key. And for someone with height limitations this is imperative. Glad I tried this plant training challenge!
Also happy to report the Mars Hydro FC3000 is working fantastic in this 2x2 tent even though Dr. Coco recommends it for a 3x3. I just raised it an extra inch or two and keep the driver mounted outside the tent so the temps stay perfect. Every square inch of my tent is getting optimal light.
Finished with my big pruning yesterday to take her into flower. There were so many leaves growing into each other in a big bushy tangle. So I exposed a lot of the branches I want to promote into main tops for the stretch. She responded really well and looks great today.
Getting a lot of pistils now. She is stretching and I am letting it get more vertical growth as she is fully trained out to fill the tent.
I did a ton more pruning of mostly branches. They seem to grow overnight. Now I have the main branches identified to focus on.
Did more pruning. Still stretching. So far the stretch has been below moderate, in line with what Humboldt said about this strain being perfect for those with height limitations.
The tops are starting to form tiny dots, the beginning of little budlets.
Got a little nute burn from jacking up the EC since my run off EC never gets above my inflow, so I have just accepted the fact I can not go by run off this grow but straight by how the plant looks. I went up to 2800EC but run off only got to 1900EC. I am now back to around 1600EC and will probably go lower to avoid N tox problem in bloom.
