Last minute decision to hop in since last year was fun. Will be running her through veg in the same soil that I’ve been recycling since last years challenge. Galaxy Brain’s lineage is Cosmic Queen x Zamaldelica Express. I’m also reversing a 24k x Cosmic Queen, so it’s possible this entry might catch some feminized pollen, and I am alright with this idea....
After 48 hours using paper towel method, I didn't see any signs of germination so I started a new one. Checked that one at 36 hours:
I placed the other into soil, and a few days later I now have 2 Galaxy Brains:
Here they were yesterday on day 3/4 (just counting from day 3 for simplicity from this point)
They are each in solo cups, and caught a shot of compost tea instead of water since I had some for my other project brewed (why not, right?).
After about a week from sprout:
This one started out a little "stubbier" than I'd like, so I've been trying to keep her slightly shaded to get a little more stretch from her since I have another grow in flower currently.
In less cool news, last week when I had opened my tent, the lower part of the door flap was pulled in, hooked, and sent my sprout on a tarzan like swing across the tent space. It hasn't really shown much growth, and I'm not sure it will make it. If it does survive, I will probably keep it in the cup, or do a 1 gallon:
Since the sprout is just above a week old, I figured there's still some time to add some company to the mix. Been excited to try this one out for a while. Northern Lights was the first strain with an ID that I had during the brickweed days (90's anyone?), so I'll be interested to see if there are any traits that trigger those nostalgic feelings. Day 8 on the other guy who is trying to hide in the shade, both cups got a shot of coconut water and molasses.
Decided to take a week of pics since not much else going on, so here is the past week (first week for Northern Cheese Haze):
One thing that might factor in this grow is this guy:
I'll be doing a deep tent cleaning right around the time flowering starts for sure, and am looking to incorporate some foliar feeding to minimize any pollen contamination, which will be new for me outside of my STS spray.
I've noticed some potential aeration, and PK issues with my current grow, so I redressed my pots for the challenge with some vermiculite, and a nice layer of kelp meal a few inches down. I've also seeded them with crimson clover, as I have found it to help with a consistent (but minor) N deficiency right at the end of veg, but largely to help keep my soil recycling process going until I can have beds one day.
Both will be gong into 5 gal pots. I'm marked for the party cup challenge, so should I start one of those? I'm torn, but am considering either running a Sour Crack, or a "Farm Friends" (Skyrone Stomper x Forgotten Cookies) cross I've had for a while...
I forgot to post my last update before I had taken a trip out of town, which was followed by 2 funerals and another trip out of town that wasn't expected. Since I've had to leave the plants largely unattended, this grow definitely has it's quirks that I'm working with.
Galaxy Brain - I potted up this one around day 15, and about 2 days later I had pistils already. Then came the strange growth/toxicity. Not sure how, but with the dark growth and curling indicates some N-tox, and weird leaf shape is possibly too much PK? Haven't had these issues before, and so far my NCH next to it seems pretty happy.
NCH - I had to move this one to a larger pot earlier than I wanted, and I think it may have shocked her a little giving me some "ducks feet" leaves on the first nodes. Since I had other plants finishing up, the light was pretty high up, so she stretched a bit more than I would've liked to. Lots of LST in these current days, and I've also been doing some pruning to the lower flower sites on the Galaxy Brain.
Today:
Since I had the stretch of weeks leaving them unattended, I focused largely on LST this passed week. They got their second dose of compost tea, water and a shot of Fish Sh!t yesterday. My deformed Galaxy Brain has actually developed into a really cool bud structure with the sugar leaves being small and single bladed. Should make for the quickest trim job I've ever had, lol.
My NCH had a much longer veg period, and the size of her so far really shows. A lot more LST than I would typically do, but it would have towered over my other plant. She seems to have handled it pretty well, even with the main taking a near 90 degree turn here:
I wasn't very happy with how this started off this year, but things seem to have settled with a mutant and potential monster. Going to throw a nice layer of leaf compost in the next couple of days, and I'll probably start feeding a bloom booster to the NCH to encourage her size more.

Since I had such a weird start with the Galaxy Brain, I've pretty much stayed the course with plain water up until now. As odd as it is, I am pretty happy with how she has developed. Should be the easiest flower I've trimmed by the looks of it. 2 different bud structures on her to boot:
This has been a very fast grow, she's kicking out a loud fruity smell, and with all other things considered, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out so far.
Northern Cheese Haze is probably going to yield a few more grams than her counter-part. I'm hoping to get a little more spread between the branches as she bulks up, but might have to stake this one, and tie them off myself.
Once a week, I have been feeding some Build-a-Bloom from BAS, and I just top-dressed with their bloom boost compost mix today (both plants). With how busy this passed month was, it left me unable to mix up my own top-dress/tea mix, so I figured I would try out the mix from BuildASoil. Both plants also had a dose of Mammoth P (yesterday) and Fish Sh!t (Saturday) this week as well. Thinking 3 weeks on the Galaxy Brain, and 5 or 6 for the NCH.
9 days ago, I had added a nice thick top dress of Flower Boost from BuildaSoil (mix of composts and ewc) and have stuck with water only this week. I have tried to keep my own intervention minimal this run, so I think I have a combination of senescence and hunger pains settling in.
This Northern Cheese Haze has definitely made use of her space, and I will probably give her a couple extra doses of bloom boost over the next 2/3 weeks.
As for my funky little Galaxy Brain, she has been gaining some pretty decent weight for her size and has a couple branches starting to sag a little. Seems like there's about 2 weeks left on this one, so I'm not overly concerned with anything besides watching for botrytis at this point.
As a bonus:
Back in March I harvested a 3BOGxStrawberry Nuggetz cross that turned out fire. I stuck the cutting from when I topped her in some soil, and gave it some STS. 4 weeks ago I took the lowers I removed from the NCH and placed them in the same pot. It's spent it's time in an East facing window, but everything is definitely growing and I might be able to pull off a cross and mini seed run both outside of my tent. I thought it was neat....
