Preparation for SAGC
I’m going to reverse a female autoflowering plant to harvest gynoecious (XX) pollen for making gynoecious (feminized) seeds.
I’m going to germinate 1 seed in a soil-filled solo cup. I’ll use Happy Frog.
Once the plant is ready I’ll transplant into a #300 pot filled with water-only soil.
I’m going to apply the reversal spray at week 2 or 3. Fingers crossed that it takes.
I’m going to start the plant in my vegetative tent where I have other seedlings. I’m probably going to use my 15”x15” box with an HLG 65 4k. Males are simple in that sense.
I want to collect pollen before the Spring Autoflower Grow Challenge begins, and I want to do this without pollinating my other plants.
Normally I try not to interfere with seedlings as they shed their shells, but the cotyledon where stuck closed by a dried membrane, so I very carefully liberated them.
The taproot was sticking out of the rapid rooter, so I transplanted it into a solo cup of soil. I watered it in a little, and covered it in a clear plastic cup.
I decided to use my 2’x2’x4’ tent and an old “blurple” lamp to grow this reversed pollen donor. A family member will host this plant, so the setup makes the most sense.
I’ll be using an in-line AC Infinity Raxial 4” fan and a 4” VanLeno carbon filter to keep pollen and odors to a minimum. I’m going to finish setting up tonight/tomorrow and move the plant over soon.
Watered with a healthy dose of Recharge to ensure the soil has a thriving rhizosphere.
I punched a lot more holes into a spare solo cup and swapped the plant to the airier pot. Roots looked healthy, but I didn’t spend a lot of time inspecting them.
I should apply the reversing agent soon, since it goes on 2 weeks before the plant heads into bloom.
Documenting the changes day by day.
In my opinion, there are staminate flowers present. Until anthers appear, I can’t be certain. Furthermore, until I actually see seeds in the target females I won’t know if XX pollen is viable.
It’s totally possible this plant is in bloom; I don’t have enough experience with autoflowering plants to say for certain. I think so, but also it doesn’t really matter because it’ll be clear in retrospect and with autos it’s about overall cycle time (IMHO).
There are 100% staminate flowers present. Hopefully the plant gets a lot bigger before it’s done, but this cluster alone will produce more than enough pollen.
If you’re thinking of making pollen, consider wearing an N95 mask when handling it.
I don’t have a natural light source in the grow space. This is the overall view of the plant. Rather tiny.
