Expert Seeds DWC (2 Strain)

Hey all. Just started this grow the other day (Nov 3rd), and thought I'd go ahead and post it here to see what kind of feedback I can get from the community. Just joined the site because I heard about the NYGC and was excited to participate. I grow legally for medicinal purposes where I am, and I just started experimenting with DWC. I have been growing in soil for a couple years, but this is my first photoperiod run with DWC. I currently have 2 Dinafem Autoflowering ladies growing in 5 Gallon DWC Buckets, but that's for another journal.

Anyways! On to the actual Journal!

Start Date: 03 Nov 2019

  • Expert Seeds - California Orange (AKA Orange Skunk)
  • Expert Seeds - Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widdow

  • 2" GroDan Rockwool cube for germination
  • 6" Rhizocore Net Basket (Hydroton)
  • Stage 1 Veg: 3.5 Gal Bucket
  • Stage 2 Veg: 5 Gal Bucket

  • GH Flora Series Performance Pack (Testing GH 3-part ease-of-use vs yield)
  • DynaGro Pro-TeKt
  • Botanicare Hydroguard

11/3 - Soak Seeds overnight

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191103 100539

11/4 - Insert into 2" GroDan Rockwool cubes

Cubes were soaked in pH 5.5 water, then drained. Then a light nutrient solution was made using 1/2ml/l of GH RapidStart and the cubes were soaked in this solution and drained again. Then seeds were placed into the cubes and placed under 2l bottles fashioned into humidity domes.

11/8 - Finally!

The ladies have finally awoken! I transferred them from the corner of my grow tent over to the smaller propagation area of my tent and placed them under a 2' 4-bulb T5HO fixture on 24/0 cycle.

I'm sure I've forgotten tons of information that I should have included, but here's to a good start! I usually do regular updates on my grow journals on Sunday afternoon/evenings, but I plan on doing plenty of mid-week updates as they start growing more. Thanks again to everyone stopping by and feel free to hit me up with any comments, questions, or anything else. As always, Happy Growing!

Hello, everyone! Today marks the start of week 1. They are both feeding from a mix of GH RapidStart and Tap water mixed at 0.5ml/l.

California Orange:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191110 115239

Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widow:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191110 115307

Not much to update at this time. They look very happy as of yet, and adding the cardboard shield stopped the nutrient solution from evaporating away so quickly. The California Orange is ~3cm tall and the GG4xWW is about 4cm tall. I plan on keeping them in this approximate setup until they start rooting out the bottom of the cubes as that is most conducive to the Rhizocore net pots that I have. As always, feel free to hit me up with any comments or questions. Happy Growing!

Hey, there. Just a quick, little update. I was checking on the little ladies during my lunch break and noticed that one of them (Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widow) is starting to show a little root peeking through the bottom of the 2" rockwool cube.

All in all, growth is good. She's still at a young enough stage to be able to see differences in her day-to-day. These two were taken 1 day apart.

Hey everyone, thanks for checking out the grow. This will be the update at the start of week 2 since germination. I went ahead and prepared their buckets on 11/13 with 1/4 strength GH Flora Trio Performance Pack nutrients (details below). Each one is in a 3.5 Gallon DWC bucket with a 6" Rhizocore Net Pot Bucket Lid.

Light Schedule: 20/4
Temps(Hi/Low): 73/64
RH: 63%

California Orange (aka Orange Skunk)

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191114 153113
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191114 153042

Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widow

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191114 153156
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191114 153147

I'm not sure what's up with the GG4xWW. Cubes were soaked in 5.5pH light nutrient solution (250ppm, 0.5ec) exactly the same as the California Orange. Could be something in the Rockwool, but could just as easily be a bad seed (Attitude Freebie). I "rinsed" the cube with some of the nutrient solution from the bucket (see below), to hopefully clear up whatever is bothering it, but only time will tell.

Week 1 Nutrient Solution (ml/gal):
1.25ml Micro
1.25ml Grow
1.25ml Bloom
5ml FloraBlend
2ml Botanicare Hydroguard
pH: 5.9

All comments and questions are always welcome. Thanks for stopping by the garden and, as always, Happy Growing!

Hey all, just a minor update. On one hand, I am impressed daily by how spot-on the California Orange (aka Orange Skunk) is getting on. On the other, The GG4xWW is an enigma unto itself. I have never had a seed with such odd starting growth. This reminds me of when you get really awkward growth when pH is out of whack, but I'm confident that it isn't. It could be something in the rockwool, but it also could just be a bad seed. I know shit happens sometimes. Anyways, here they are:

California Orange (aka Orange Skunk)

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191115 153341
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191115 153352

Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widow

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191115 153422
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191115 153417
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191115 153408

Both ladies are under makeshift humidity domes and they get top-fed approx every 4-8 hours. They are in 2" rockwool, so they hold the moisture fairly well during those breaks. I'm not sure I'll keep the GG4xWW if she keeps throwing off such weird growth. I could just as easily push the California Orange to the limits instead. Just a few weeks longer veg time.

Thanks for stopping by the garden. As always, Happy Growing!

Hey, everyone! Thanks for stopping in again. It's been a few days, but I wanted to let them both make some notable progress before dumping more pictures. Without further ado, here are the ladies:

California Orange:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161711
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161701
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161723

Gorilla Glue #4 x White Widow:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161743
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161735
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191122 161754

As you can see, the roots have shot off! Crystal white and happy as could be. The California Orange looks happy, but I can see some minor signs of ph disturbance, but nothing I am going to mess with until the next res change (TBD). The GG4xWW is also looking much, much better. New growth is more even and consistent. I am hoping that she pulls through since I was super excited about trying this cross. Even warped as it is, by comparison you can see the clear sativa-leaning genetics and the indica-leaning genetics being expressed by these two ladies. As the root mass expands, I expect nutrient uptake to increase. I plan on doing a 4-way topping strategy since I intend on ScrOGing these ladies. On my last ScrOG grow I only did a two-way top and I think a 4-way top will fill the screen more evenly in relatively less time, given the low screen height that I like to use. I plan on giving these ladies each half of my 3x3. Putting the Sativa in the back given her taller bud-structure. I'm not sure if I should alter my topping strategy since they will have a rectangle instead of a square ScrOG. (This is all assuming that the GG4xWW stays). Anyways, always happy to hear from you guys and get your informed opinions. Without collaboration the rate of improvement is linear.

Thanks for stopping by the garden, and, as always, Happy Growing!

11/25 - Disce quasi semper victurus vive quasi cras moriturus

Today is only a minor update. Roots are showing slight discoloration, but I feel that is due to the GH nutes. They still look and feel healthy. Topside growth is improving and she is starting to recolor herself since I bumped up the nutes by ~100-150ppm. She was just starting to get light, so I bumped up to the next week of the schedule I am using.

Week 3 Nutes (per 1 US Gallon):
1.25ml RapidStart
2.5ml Micro
2.5ml Grow
2.5ml Bloom
5ml FloraBlend (Vegan Tea)
2ml Botanicare Hydroguard

~500ppm - 5.9pH - 68F (Res)

Mars Hydro SP150 @ 24-26"

Temp/RH: 66F/77F 45%/70%

Thanks for stopping by the garden. I love being a part of the community here; learning and growing. Thank you for all your support and feedback, and as always, Happy Growing!

Hey, everyone. Thanks for stopping by again. Just doing an update since it's been a few days and some minor changes have happened. The good news, to start, is that the GG4xWW is definitely doing much better. I did some minor trimming on her, as you will see, to remove some of the bad growth that had stopped being useful.  They are still being fed ~500ppm @ 5.9pH. They will get a res change and probably bump up the nutes again this weekend. Anyways, Here are the ladies:

Hey, everyone. I know it's been a few days since the last update, but not much has happened except excellent vegetative growth. This weekend I'll be starting the LST on both of the little ladies. I also changed their nutes to a modified CFC/DrCoco formula, but suited for DWC. The only thing I did differently was to add a foliar feeding of GH Floralicious Plus. Anyways, here are the ladies:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191203 194858(2)
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191204 110821

They are flourishing quite nicely, though they desperately need to start training. Each of these ladies will have access to 1/2 of a 3'x3' flowering space and I'm thinking about ScrOG-ing them out, since I had just positive results on this current Autoflower run. Anyways, questions and comments are always welcome. I always love being a part of this community. Thanks for stopping by my garden, and, as always, Happy Growing

Just thought I'd throw up a couple pics of what they looked like this morning (12/6 @ 0600 CST) so you can see how they have been responding to the new nutes.

Good evening, one and all. It has been a few days since I've posted an update on these ladies. They've been topped, supercropped (HST), and had some selective pruning done between 12/6-12/7 (after the last update). This was mainly done to help slow down their vertical growth as well as focus their growth. The knuckles aren't fully healed where I supercropped them, but they are recovering just fine. Next grow I want to pick up some of that grafting tape for these exercises. I'd also like to experiment with grafting cannabis, but that's a topic for another time. Anyways, on to the stars of this show...

California Orange:

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191211 153611

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191211 153856

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191211 153755
Cannabis Grow IMG 20191211 153819

The GG4xWW is still throwing off some odd growth, so I focused her down to exactly 8 tops.

Thanks for stopping by the garden, and, as always, Happy Growing!

Well, here we are. Ten days since my last update, simply because they're in a holding pattern until the last flowering auto leaves the tent. On Thursday, 19 December, I started modifying the existing lighting cycle (20/4) by 1 hour each day. This should result with the light cycle ending on 12/12 as of 26 December. Once they hit 12/12, they will be up-sized to 5 Gallon buckets and nutrients changed out for Transition (From Flip to Pistils) nutes.

Cannabis Grow IMG 20191221 195205

A few fun-facts to catch everyone up in summary of where these ladies are currently:
> They both hit the water on 03 November, which puts them at 7 weeks from seed, but realistically, I'd say that's a solid 6 weeks of veg.
> They have been topped twice and are currently ~18" tall.
> They are being fed according to the CFC/DrCoco nutrient regimen, with base nutrients doubled to account for recirculating hydroponics instead of drain-to-waste.
> The only other difference to the schedule is my use of Botanicare Hydroguard and that I am not currently using yucca powder, though I plan on using it on the NYGC grow.
> They have been holding on this feed since week 4 (Late Veg to Flip).
> They are currently receiving 10LPM of air in each bucket, but will be getting 30LPM in each bucket once they size up to the 5 Gallon buckets.
> Res stays fairly stable 64-69F, 1.2-1.3ec (600-650ppm), ~5.8pH.
> They are both drinking close to 1qt/1L every day, but the California Orange feeds slightly more than the GG4xWW.

Thankfully they are both 55-60 day so they should finish fairly close together. Once they have flipped, it will be back to weekly updates throughout their flowering period.

Thanks to everyone in this community for all your help and support. I look forward to growing with all of you over this coming year and beyond.
