NYGC Global Cuisine: Apex x Blue Hawaii

For the New Years grow challenge I have decided to run a pair of accidental seeds. The pollen donor's line has a history of throwing manners when exposed to light stress. This runs nanners were thanks to my own ineptness and "smart" timers around day light savings time.

I decided to run these feminized  seeds due to their potential to be perfect for the one cola challenge. The Blue Hawaii pollen donor is a cross of Apothicary Genetics Platinum OG Male and a local bred Blue Suede Shoes (Elvis x Blueberry). The pheno is slow growing but stacks tight nodes of medium sized flowers with an aroma of grapefruit and cheese.

The seed mother is Ethos Genetics Apex F1. The Apex is a faster growing plant with wider node spacing; strong lime, mango and subtle deisel notes who tested af 25% thc. She avoided herming under the same light stress as the blue hawaii.

I plan on running two pruning techniques on these girls. 1 will be entered in the 1 cola challenge and the other will be topped and trained. These will be a quick turn around as I intend to flip on or slightly after Valentines day.

I started soaking the seeds at 3pm Dec. 31 2020 in tap water and fulvic acid. Slightly after midnight I placed the seeds in rapid roosters and placed the rapid roosters in red solo cups with holes drilled in the bottom and sides, filled with coco and pumice approx 70/30 mix. I mixed about a half cup of water with a few drops of GH floralicious grow, EN-1 and tiny pinches of recharge, myco and azos. I evenly applied the solution to the rapid rooter and coco mix.

Tragedy struck today. Living in a desert can making keeping humidity up a difficult task at times. This is great for fighting mold in bloom but not so much for popping seeds. One successful seedling and one with helmet head. I attempted removal of the helmet head but killed the patient in the process. Not all is lost atleast as I intended to run clones alongside this grow from the beginning.

I've decided to go full mad scientist on this grow and will be trying to operate almost completely with home made nutrients including Bokashi juice, fish tank water and seed sprout teas. So while I was prepping my seeds for sprout I'm also sprouting seeds for nutrition and collecting waste for my purpose built Bokashi brews.

Cannabis Grow 20210106 090328

I start with soaking approx. 1 cup of  organic barley seeds in water with a few drops of humic acid and bokashi juice. I let that sit over night then drain leaving the seeds in a dark place. Rinse the seeds every 12 hours until the seeds have about a half inch to inch long root this will take 2-3 days. I will then blend the seeds with equal part water and strain out the chunks using cheese cloth. The chunks I will add to my veg bokashi compost and the liquid I will split into two portions. One smaller portion will be used fresh and the other portion will be fermented for storage. To do this I add EM-1 to the mixture and store sealed in a dark cool place for 2 weeks. I will later make alfalfa and corn seed sprout teas for transition to bloom.

The Barley Tea will provide a natural source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and gibberellins to aid in growth. The alfalfa tea will add triacontanol which raises chlorophyll levels improving photosynthesis and promoting root growth. The corn with bring large levels of cytokines a hormone that promotes lateral branching. At high levels the corn tea can depress stretch building more compact plants which could be crucial for the style of growing I intend to implement.

I mover her to her 1/4 gallon fabric pot. This will be the pot I flower her in. Just barely bigger then a solo cup. Topped with sand to hopefully stop the fungus gnats, bugs love the bokashi.

I switched my veg over to the organics and am watering with 1/2 fish tank water 1/2 ph adjusted tap water. 10 ml./gal Bokashi 2 ml./gal Fresh barley sst. Molasses. I float a 25 micron bag filled with diatomaceous earth, insect grass and crab meal in my reservoir over the air stone.

My veg bokashi is made with lots of coffee grounds, egg shells, fan leaves and various table scraps. I also throw in alittle crab meal, Diatom earth and insect frass when I make the bokashi.

Not much ti report but shes progressing nicely.

Cannabis Grow 20210120 113703

My corn and alfalfa SST's are brewing now off to buy a bunch of limes and lemons to add to the bloom bokashi then chop up some herring and get that all sealed up so it will have alittle over 3 weeks to brew then all that's left is to make some clone gel and get the clones that will flower with her ready. I shouldnt have much to report until the 1st as pretty much everything is on auto pilot but then things will start getting exciting around here 🙂

This is a friendly reminder to everyone to check your equipment regularly! Checked on veg and had a plant that was starting to droop. Discovered all my watering stakes had clogged from the organic build up. Luckily the pump was fine. I'll have to change out and clean my irrigation far more often then with the salts. Luckily I'm still watering my little girl myself instead of the timer and she wasnt affected.

I've raised my feeding to 15ml/gal of Bokashi added SLF100 to help clean my lines. This is my one exception to the all homemade nutrient regimen, I think I could get by without but keeping my lines clean is going to be critical growing in the tiny pots I'm going to use. My Barley SST finished its 2 week ferment with the EM-1 and I'm using 3ml/gal in the feed no aswell.

So much for auto pilot I guess. I should have known better lol.

I had another instance where every stake clogged immediately after i changed the feed in the res. I think when i add new water it is stirring up the heavier particles and they are all being sent through the lines at once. I havent had any issues with it clogging my cheap chinese pump but the clogs make it to the tiny holes of the stakes. So Ive added an inline filter i had sitting around and hopefully that will fix the issue.

My little girl is still kicking ass though.

Cannabis Grow 20210127 105638

Just a few days until I cut clones for her flower mates so I'm going to have to do some training on her to keep her short while they root. I'll want her top leaves to be shorter then them when they go into flower as i expect much more stretch out of her as she will have far more root mass then her friends and seedlings tend to be more vigorous. Running a seed with clones in a dutch table method may end up being the bigger challenge then dialing in the homemade nutes. Luckily training and pruning are my favorite part of growing cannabis. It's just about bonzai time.

I'd like her to be alittle darker but otherwise she is healthy and growing. Hopefully the added nutes will help. I will be switching her to a fresh brewed bokashi this weekend that should have a higher N content aswell as more viable microbial activity.

Cannabis Grow 20210129 124336

I started her training by pruning the lower nodes and binding her to the pot. I'm laughing at myself alittle anticipating her final form. Alittle over two weeks to go and shes not allowed to get any taller 🙂

My bloom encountered a massive dip in soil ph that I am currently attributing to a bokashi overdose/bad bokashi. So I'm having to do some more research and maybe rework some of my plans. From what I'm reading I may be waiting too long to use my bokashi and the microbes may have started turning in that batch. Updates to come.

So heres where I'm at. The Bokashi juice shouldnt degrade if it has food and isnt being exposed to fresh air. One of the main microbes in EM is LAB. I use EM for fermenting my SST's in place of pure LAB so there is no reason the Bokashi juice shouldnt work in the same manor.

Instead of feeding what I drain when I drain it I'm going to transfer the bokashi juice into a second phase of brewing adding it to dry amendments and molasses then letting that ferment in a sealed jar for 2 weeks. That should breed more microbial life and that water will then be used as my feed. Now I just have to decide how I want to apply it.

Just waiting for space in bloom. Clones are cut and rooting. Slowly training her around the pot and removing "lower" nodes.

Some good, some bad. The bad my clones were under whelming. I suspect a few issues, while I did experiment with fresh made aloe gel with raw honey and cinnamon for cloning gel, I dont think that was my main issue.

The only good spot I have for my clone tray is on the floor in my tent. I'm in a cabin in Alaska, the floor is around 60 degrees at the most all winter. So I tried a heat mat with a thermostat. I placed the probe under the clones so the root zone wouldnt over heat. Unfortunately the heat pad created excess humidity. I got air roots but no root roots! So I recut the ones that still look nice. Will probably take some more clones but I'm going to have to put a pause on her companions. I need really healthy clones for this to work well.

I decided to flip her alone anyway and I can add plants later. I'm going to be wasting alot of electricity running the panel @ 370 watts but it will also give me time to dial in my nutes so I can really see how this system can do.

I'm growing with a Heilux Patriot Plus Growfilm 2x2 panel. The light is made to hang inches above the canopy. It generates virtually no heat and at 4 inches provides the power of the hot spot on an HPS. This will be my second run with the light as I harvested this gorgeous Purple skunk mass from Critical Mass Collective earlier this morning.

Running only one small plant really puts a kink in my nutrient prep plans but luckily I'm flexible. I had preped the week 1 nutrients using 1 quart fish tank water from the bottom of the tank where there is more nutrient. I added 1 tablespoon of insect frass, and 1 teaspoon each of crab meal, fish bone meal, diatomaceous earth and pinches of Epsom salt and pk kelp mix with 1 tbsp of molasses, 5ml bloom bokashi and 5 ml veg bokashi. I let that sit for 2 weeks. For week 1 I'm mixing that 50/50 with water I skim off the top of the fish tank. This works out at the 1:100 bokashi to water ratio I've been using.

So here we go everybody! And happy valentine's day!

As I predicted getting a tester plant running with these nutes turned out well, as in I caught a mistake early. I wasnt paying close enough attention to my nutrient levels and woke up yesterday to early signs of lock out.

Cannabis Grow 20210216 112305

Ran some water through her and was getting a huge EC reading so I flushed about a half gallon of fish water through her until I got 650 EC runoff.

I decided this was a good time to get her set up on the resevoir so I can keep things alittle more consistent. Added my week 1 bokashi mix to fish water until I got 650 ppm reading and am using a Torus Hydro Perfect PH to regulate my ph for me with a circulation pump to keep a consistent blend. Right now she will be watered every 4 hours starting at 20 seconds and I'll dial in from there if the catch tray starts filling with run off.

The damage seems to have stopped at where it was upon discovery

I decided to go ahead and remove the large fans and lower nodes despite the stress shes been under. I figure its better to compound stressers and stunt her development slightly now early in stretch then to stack the stressors back to back and slow her growth later when shes focusing on calyx development. This is the last pruning I intend to do until harvest. Now she can focus in building one glorious cola.
