Happy 420 everyone!!

For the SAFC I’m going to be cheating a bit and growing an unofficial strain. I’ve never grown an autoflower before, but I happened to receive a free auto seed with my last seedbank order — BCN Critical XXL Autoflower by Seedstockers.

7E756D47 7696 44D5 A3EF 7071927563FC

Here are some details from the breeder:

One of our heaviest yielding auto varieties, BCN Critical Autoflower is also a powerful smoke with THC levels of 22%+. These legendary genetics are reliable and consistently heavy producers of strong cannabis, its a proven auto that you can trust to deliver. Indoors this variety takes around 75 days from seed to harvest and does well with 20 or 24 hours of daily light. The buds are bigger than usual with a sticky frosty coating and an aromatic smell, with hints of citrus. Very easy and uncomplicated to grow, with heavy harvests and an unbeatable smoke.

I plan to grow her in a coco/perlite mix in a 2x2 tent under a Horticultural Lighting Group 135W LED. She’ll be temporarily sharing this space with four other plants that will be going outdoors after last frost.

The seed went into distilled water right at midnight and will soak for less than 24 hours. Next step will be to transfer into paper towel.

Can’t wait to grow with you all again! I’ll definitely be reading everyone’s grow journals. As always, I’m always open to any questions / comments on my grow, I want to learn as much as possible.

Grower love!

Update for April 21st (Day 2):

The shell of the seed has opened up and I can see signs of a tiny tap root! Transferred into a damp paper towel and put into a warm, dark closet.

Just a quick progress update. She’s started growing a second node, currently about the size of the cotyledons.

Fertigations are at 419 EC, but I plan to start increasing strength gradually.

Update for May 1st:

She’s growing well and should start a third node soon. It won’t be long before she’ll need to be transferred into a larger container. Next step will be a 1 gallon fabric pot.

SAFC DAY 30

Update for May 19th:

It’s been a while since I’ve updated!

Today was a transplant day. She moved from a 1L fabric pot into a 5L. Also moved from a small cabinet into my grow tent.

She’s been showing some signs of deficiency, so I’m trying a foliar feed tonight. Current EC of nutrient solution is around 1050, but I probably waited too long to increase the nutrient strength.

Update for May 21st:

I measured outflow EC for my last two fertigations and got 1103 and 1121, which seems reasonable.

I’m still debating if I should leave her indoors in the tent or put her outside.

Update for May 27th:

She’s looking pretty good this morning. Maybe not as large as I’d like at this stage, but that’s okay.

She’s also starting to show some small pistils, so I’ve changed over to bloom nutrients.

Update for June 1st:

Finally got my automated watering system in place on this grow. I’d been neglecting watering by hand, probably only once per day. I cleaned out my reservoir, and recalibrated my setup to make sure it’s putting out exactly 1L in 1 minute. I’m going to run this 3x daily for now.

Update for June 2nd:

She’s been looking a bit sad and droopy lately. Not sure exactly why. I’m open to suggestions from the community, as always.

Hopefully switching to more high frequency fertigation (3x daily) will help. Current EC inflow is 1102, outflow ~950, using @dr-coco’s “Early Bloom” nutrient ratios.

Update for June 6th:

The drooping seems to be getting worse, unfortunately. I’m at a loss as to what’s happening with her.

One strange thing I’ve noticed is that my run-off EC is significantly lower than inflow. I’m putting in ~1500 EC and getting ~850 out. @dr-coco’s book suggests that this could be caused by poor water distribution. I wonder if the hydro ring just isn’t distributing well enough.

The drooping seems to have improved significantly. I can start to see some trichome formation and she’s developing a citrus smell.

Update for June 10th

I upgraded my single plant automated watering system today. I switched to black tubing (from clear) and added an additional 6 inch hydro ring.

B9A0BB7D 0D77 4F52 82B7 C7B7D4C1F4DF

The flow to each ring is controlled by a dedicated ball valve, allowing complete individual control. I experimented using just one valve, but one ring would inevitably flow more than the other.

C101F49A 5A8D 44D0 A997 E8407D70973F

1/2 inch tubing and fittings are a pain in the ass to work with. My tee connectors were incredibly tight and required heating the tubing. The ball valves fit perfectly. The connectors on the rings are too lose and will probably need clamps.
