PTGC Mainlines: Few and Far Between

This has been my Year of Mainlines, and I am finishing it off with trying to do as traditional a mainline as possible. My first mainline training came out great, but my spring and summer grows not so much. Mainlining autoflowering plants may be possible indoors, but I do not recommend trying it unless you have complete control of the environment. My experience in the greenhouse during a rainy, cloudy spring was less than stellar. And meanwhile, I got busy with a new job and did not  keep up with pruning larfy lower branches on my indoor plants, so that mainline ended up far too bushy with too many bud sites.

So, this grow, I am going to try to replicate my first success, and keep after those lower branches so I can focus the growth mostly on the 8 colas.

I am also signed up to grow test the new Photontek SQ300W Pro for this grow! I can't wait for it to arrive!

Started seeds last night. I am growing two strains of photo-period regular seeds, courtesy of OCGrower76: his MACv2 F2 cross and his Watermelon Gelato x MACv2 cross. Because I would ideally like one female of each in the tent, I started 3 seeds of each variety. Rather than pay for sex testing, I'll just keep growing all six until they show signs of sex and cull the males. If that isn't until the flip, it will give me plenty of practice with mainline training, even if it does mean more work and more nutrients.

I decided to try something a little different on the germination process this time and skip the paper towel step. Let's see how it works.

  1. Scuffed seeds individually in a tube o' sandpaper.
  2. Placed seeds in individual, labelled vials of distilled water. Tapped them to make sure they were floating and not wedged down in the bottom of the vials (which half of them were).
  3. Waited two hours and they had all sunk.
  4. Placed each seed directly in a rapid rooter and capped with a torn piece of rapid rooter.
  5. Soaked rapid rooters with distilled water.
  6. Put in humidity dome on seedling mat set to 30ºC.

This morning, I realized that because the temperature sensor for the mat is at the top of the rapid rooter, 30ºC might overheat the seeds, so I turned it down to 28°C. Hope I didn't cook them...

The first two seeds have popped their heads above the rapid rooter! Sorry for the fuzzy picture, but I took it through the humidity dome.

Since the new sprouts will need a little light, I moved them into the 4 x 2 ft (120 x 60 cm) mom tent, where I have a single 30W T8 fluorescent bulb providing just enough PAR to keep the moms growing slowly. (PAR is photosynthetically active radiation: the kind of light that plants can use). It should be enough for the sprouts, but if they need more as they start growing, I can always pull out the old 45W dimmable blurple panel and put it a bit closer to the dome.

That tent is pretty busy right now.  In addition to the moms, some clones, and the seedling dome, it is also holding some flowers that I chopped last night!

The seedlings' eventual home will be the 3.3 x 3.3 ft (100cm x 100cm) tent, but that's still full of plants ripening, and won't be available for a week or more.

Quick update today. All of the Watermelons are above ground and opening their cotyledons! I only had one endocarp (the inner lining of the pericarp) get stuck on, and a little soaking with distilled water and the gentle fine end of a tidy tip cotton swab got it off without damage. One of the MACs is up, and the other two are visible above ground but haven't broken free yet.

Everybody is above ground and photosynthesizing now. Started them on a seedling nutrient mix at EC of 475 μS/cm. The Watermelon are maintaining their lead and making some true leaves, but the MACv2 F2s are looking pretty happy too.

RH in the dome is only around 75%, so I need to add a dish of water and start turning down the warming mat faster.

Time to prep some coco and get ready to pot them. Also, hung a 45W dimmable blurple panel just above the dome to give them a bit more light than the T8 that is too high. Probably at about 15W.

Dipped the roots in Mykos and potted into 500ml (20 oz) party cups in buffered coco-perlite. Removed the dome and upped the seedling mix to an EC of 740.

Two of the seedlings were leaning over. I’ve had this happen before with rapid rooters, so I’m not concerned. I used a bit of soft-tie to make a stake with a loop to hold them up but still let them move around, and repositioned the fan to make them wiggle a bit more. That usually gets the stem strengthened and thickened in a few days.

Meanwhile, 2nd leaf sets are starting on all the seedlings, and no other obvious issues. Time to mix up seedling nutrients in a larger batch!

I had to setup my hydrocloner in the veg tent, and I haven’t cleaned the flower tent yet, so I am taking the chance of moving the girls into the dirty flower tent for a day or two. Crossing my fingers. I’ll have time today to clean and sterilize this tent, so please don’t judge me for the mess on the floor!

Third leaf sets are growing, and the first node is starting to produce branch buds. Still feeding seedling nutrients until the first three nodes are grown.

Tent cleaned and sterilized. Plants now have 3 leaf sets with branch buds already beginning on the 1st and 2nd nodes. Should be time to up-pot soon, but switched to early veg nutrients with an EC of 1115 μS/cm. Light is up to about 350μmol/s/m2, and the plants are poised to explode.

I expect the roots will be filling the current pots within a few days, then it will be time to up-pot to #3 air-pots (8.8L). RH has been a bit low (around 58%-64%), but that’s because I am drying the previous harvest i my lung room. Once those are jarred, I can increase the RH in the lung room.

Light is up to almost 500μmol/s/m2 and no sign of light stress yet. Leaves are really expanding now! There are some roots starting to peek out the bottoms of some of the pots; I should be able to pot them up tomorrow.

The MACv2 F2 plants on the right have mostly caught up with the Watermelon Gelato x MACv plants.

Re-buffering some coco tonight. Tomorrow they get potted up into 4L/1-gallon pots. Things are about to move fast! Should be just a day or three after that before it will be time to top them for the first time!

RH was still low with the arrival of dry fall weather, so I added the dehumidifier. I’ve been increasing the light and am now up to 178W (Max PPFD of 620). I’ll go up to 700, then hold there until the flip when I’ll slowly increase it to 1000. I switched to mid veg nutrients at an EC of 1250 (my water is around 75).

They are really taking off now and it should be time to start the mainline training (first top) in a couple of days!
