Hey my Misfits & fellow NYGCers!
You all getting stoked for the NYGC!!! I know I am 🤓
This will be my first CfC challenge, 1st in Coco, 1st proven genetics fem seed Northern Lights #5x Haze from a fellow CfC member and will be using the General Hydroponics line. Armour SI, CaliMagic, the tiro, Koolbloom, dry koolbloom, Diamond Nectar, Floranectar and rapid start.
My only ever seed I have popped is a photo, growing now and is from the 2 clones I just finished which one had hermied. I pulled all the bananas but somehow nature gave two perfect seeds and I only assume it is a cross since the one with these 2 seeds had no other sign of seeds but I digress lol
Back to my list of firsts. First autowater and drain system.
Now that's not it but the gist of it lol I had almost everything I needed already.
Once I get it fully set up in my bathtub I will dial it in and also buffer the coco while dialing it in to save a step sort of. I'll have a month or so to get it all sorted. I have two plants mid flower that will be ready just after the start of the NYGC (mid Jan) so I will have to start my seed out of the tent and hope when it is ready repot and to go in the tent, she's not to far along!
Oh and another first in a way for everyone if they so choose to go this route after they see it works. I am going to use Exo-Terra Coco.
If that shows. It's meant for the bedding of amphibians and reptiles which absorb things through their skin and is said can be use for plants IN the terrarium, So. At under $20cnd for 3x 8.8Lt bricks it is a frugal choice if suitable and really I think it is... unless it has more coco peat to wash away than other brands meant for agriculture.
Anywho, that's the pre-start to it all. Can't wait to see everyone getting involved, styles of grow and strains. The only downfall to growing is the waiting lmao 😘
Growers Love Yo!
I'll post again in a few days with my auto water/drain system progress
So I am working with the Auto watering system and so far it is doing a continual flow circulating the buffering solution, now It's only a small amount of coco an perlite to start which is good because I forgot to rinse it. I checked the ppm an ec of my tap water(114ppm/1253ec), then the unrinsed coco in tap water was almost double (I didn't record it). So I rinsed the majority with tap water till the runoff read what my tap water read, give or take a few points.
Below is the un rinsed but with buffer solution of 15ml CaliMaGic to 2 gallons of water, , added another 2 gallons but didn't take a reading after dilution. Once it was running for half hour the mix was ppm 721 ec 1531.
pH Buffer solution to 6.2. Runoff cycling went to 5.93 pH Will keep system running over night.
I should have mentioned My main light is a
Advanced Platinum P150
said to replace 250w HPS
Draws 87watts on full.
Tent is a 36in x 20in x 63 in
Seedling light 40W Square LED Garage Light Bulb,LED Ceiling Lighting Fixture lamp 4000LM, 6500K that was gifted by a generous CfC member
With a [reptile] heat pad/mat and humidity dome.
I will do the water drop, paper towel to a jiffy puck (the ones that swell up with a net around them) and repot as nessecery and I post sizes when I up-put and add to my journal.
So I'm happy it's holding up with no leaks after a few hrs running constantly.
Now I have a question in 3 parts lol with it being buffered twice will it be fine to to sit and wait for its use in nygc? 2 would I need to buffer it again after the month or two of drying out? 3 should I leave it with one buffering and then buffer it before I go to use it?
thanks
GO MISFITS!!! You all ROCK!
You may or may not have noticed the color of the water. That's from the coco, no nutrients. I just seen a video (other than Docs, sorry Dr Coco) where they test Coco in a slurry to see how clean it is. Coconuts grows by the sea and can be salty, I never thought to test it's EC or salinity.
So once I get home I will test the runoff and see if it reads a ppm or EC and good from there. I have a brick of CanaCoco incase I can't flush this stuff clean or find out even Coco meant for hydro has really dark runoff.
Also it's not cost effective lol That's what you get when you shop online then get to a hydro store. Bag of Coco inline 10lb bag $60, store $20 or something to that effect. Anyways, still putting wrapping my head around this new style of growing.
My practice seedling is now a young plant and I can now visualise the Mainlining process. I want to do a 3-D computer image concept to a how to mainline or manyfold. Because as clear as words can be eyes understand a lot more, for me at least 😉
GO MISFITS
So I finally took the reading lol
103 ppm and 0219 EC which the ppm is half what the tap water read so it might be the calcium taken in by the coco.
I have been wondering about something and seeking others thoughts and experience.
I might choose to go manyfold, I actually thought this before I said in the previous entry I would main line. But instead of topping all four branches the second time, I only top two branches.
My theory is based on the first topping to the 3rd Node and super cropping of the 3rd Node Branches, which will cause the 2nd lower node to fight for apical dominance [I have seen this in my 1st seedling grow growing now, level tops but 2nd node branch hasn't beefed up yet. PG-13 is my NYGC test plant so If I mess up things in training her I know what not to do to my NYGC Plant 🙂 ]. At this point the plant is mostly square looking down at it.
Now if I keep all four branches level, which? 2nd or 3rd, node will be taking the most nutrients? Because whichever one does, is the one I will top. Theoretically redirecting all the nutrients to the two branches of the now 4 tops and Maybe equalling out the nutrients uptake from total 6 Main tops/Colas from only 4 lateral branches. Also this is where I would train it to be rectangular to fill my narrow tent. 36in x 20in x 63 in. I do think a mainline or even a full Manyfold would be to crowded.
Please let me know your thoughts, should I top 3rd Node Lateral Brach or the 2nd Node Lateral Branch for closest balance of nutrients up take showing through by way of equal sized colas.
See you all on Drop night NYGC The only way to celebrate New Years 😀 5 the FIVE DAYS!!! Whoooo
Rock it Misfit style!
Like
WHOA we are on the Verge duders
K so it took a bit but I have a Shot of pH 6.06 water.
a Jiffy soaked pH 6.12 with 40ml water, citric acid to down the pH
till the tap root shows
And then the Coco Perlite in a 400 Ec Calmag waiting to be taken out drip and rinse before placing the Jiffy into it.
Yeah Misfits taking over the NEW YRS!!!

on a led light for heat lol Heat pad has no space for now.
Yeah Misfits taking over the NEW YRS!!! t-minus 4hrs 30 minutes

So as you all may have gathered my NL#5XH didn't take. I know 3 of 4 did from the friend that sent me the seed, So really 3 of 5 germinated. I can only assume she just wasn't meant to be and that's okay. I am still blown away by the generosity from CfC members.
As you may have read, I took a Clone (Topped my strain PG-13) at 19:38 Jan 1st 2020. So I can still be a part of the NYGC.
Little back ground, this is a Cross from a Hermied plant named G-one (well G-1 but I like it my way lol) to the Pink Lady Strain I had with the She-male.
I am unsure that PG-13 is male or female yet, maybe you all can let me know if a accidental hermi provides Fems seeds?
So my next step is either continuing this journal with PG-13 Clone or move over to the Attack of the Clones group.
Grower Luv ya'll and thanks for the support!!
Okay so I've been able to change my strain name but can't say it is a Clone or link to the Clones group but that's Okay, everything above in equipment stays the same.
I mentioned above that the Clone was taken at 19:38 (7:38Pm) Jan 1st. I will update with root progress soon 😀
So far in the "using what's on hand" to make a humidity Dome. Which means a Giant SNifter lol
With it kinda in a Dr. Kratky method. Jiffy is in a cut hole of the lid of a cricket tub (I buy crickets for my animals) and is in water as well as placed on the heat mat. I will get pics tomorrow, maybe have roots lol
The base of my temporary Dr. Kratky type method cloner.
Jiffy sits well in the cut hole and is just in the water.
And the all suitable Giant Snifter as the Humidity Dome 😀 lol
So no roots out the bottom yet. But the peat pulls out with a little tug on the clone. Is that a good way to check, probably not 🙃
I have also take a risky risk suggested by @Dr-coco for the NL#5xH seed, since I still have it in the paper towel. To give the seed a squeeze against the seem of the seed, not to crack it though. So what do I do?
I cracked it lol not squished but it open, I seen in and seen green fleshy[?] but didn't keep it open to really look. On the off chance I didn't hurt it IF (big if here if the caps don't tell you) the seed is still viable and was stuck in the shell. But I can say that the time I had to look, it didn't seem to have swelled to even put pressure on the shell.
With all that being said I placed the seed back into the warm wet paper towel.
May the Growth Be with you!!
@dr-Coco
OMG man! You may have solved my NYGC good sir!!!
We have LIFE! But let's not get too excited..... okay let's get EXCITED lmao
Sooo as you may know the seed stalled out, just didn't have it in it to make a life of itself.
But the PG-13 Clone has shown roots 😀 and now I need to understand what, how and why you have to "harden off" your clones sometimes.
Twice now, I removed the dome and she went all limp, scared me the first time (someone here did think it was the quick drop in rH and after a few hrs back in the high rH she came back), worried me the second.
From the Cheap Home Grow Podcast the panel members along with Dr Coco: cloning 101, I first heard of this "Hardening off" and confirmed what happened the first time I removed the humidity dome. If I understand it correctly, the clone is in a high rH environment and it's capillary system and (or is it just) stomas are not transpiring so much because the environment is so rich with humidity. When you remove the humidity by lifting the dome the plant transpires so fast that it can't draw up moisture to replace and thus can't hold itself up, if I understand it right.
So now I read up on the how to harden off (did they say how to on the podcast lol) and hope it doesn't take to long since she need to be potted up asap as roots are showing.
Oh and tonight I seen my first Preflower Pistils 😀 so even though she may be high risk to hermi, I know it is at least a she.
