Blue Dream/Girl Scout Cookies - 1st Grow
First time grower/never consumer here looking to share some progress and receive feedback if anyone is so kind.
To start I think it would be best to post the progress with each major step in its own comment as I am starting this journal late.
I am growing x1 Blue Dream as I read they are easier for starters, and x1 Girl Scout Cookies which has been slightly more difficult after getting into its larger container.
The growth has seemed a bit slow to me and around Day 23-25 the first issue became noticeable.
Buffered coco with CalMag water
Day 1-3 Germination (Paper towel + plate method on heating pad)
Temps were 22°C-32ºC, kept moist with spraying spring water. I scuffed and soaked the seeds first for 3 hours in warm water. GSC was very much ahead of BD at this point.
Day 3 - 6 Germination/Early Seedling
I moved my seeds to jiffy pots on day 3 after the radicle reached a good length. They remained in darkness until the cotyledons opened, then went to 24 hour lighting until the first leaves appeared. Watering is with spring water in a small syringe, just drops near the plant.
Day 7-18 Seedling
Seedlings in their peat pots, being fed very watered down nutrients, and receiving CalMag foliar spray once per day when it is dark. I have a humidifer running the whole time to keep the humidity high 70-80%, sometimes getting a little higher then adjusting it back down. Lighting is 18/6 now that the first leaves are open. Once I saw roots leaving the bottom and sides of the jiffy pot, I transplanted to 5 gallon fabric pots.
Day 8 Photo (BD on left/GSC on right)
Day 15 GSC
Day 15 BD
Day 18 Veg
Transplant day. I planted the entire Jiffy pot into the new containers. They have some fans for circulation and to get them moving but they are quite weak so supporting a bit with a small rock until they thicken up. Feeding with FoxFarms nutrients and schedule. GSC still looking ahead.
Day 20 Veg
Their pots are quite large, so I am watering about an inch around the ring of the jiffy pot as I had read that will help the roots push outwards. Removed the humidifier, its 60-70% humidity now, temps 22°C-24°C.
Up until day 14 my feed has been about pH 6.2 ppm 300-400 EC 750-850
I lost my notes for day 14-20 but I had increased the EC slightly the following week. Hoping the grow log will help me be a bit more diligent when it is caught up.
Day 25 Veg
This is 2 days after an increased fertigation pH 5.92 ppm 1149 EC 2440. Can see the slight brown on GSC lower bottom leaf, and looking back it seems I may have increased my EC way too quickly. I am having issues with slightly low ppm and high EC, but it would appear at least for GSC that it was too much. BD doesn't seem to mind.
Both of them are starting to grow some additional fan leaves from the growth tips on the bottom it looks like.
Day 26 Veg
GSC has started to show some brown tips on its very oldest growth. I think I nutrient burned it from increasing my EC too fast. I did a flush with some CalMag Ph water, then refed lower EC. GSC looks droopier prior to the flush and the newest leaves seem behind BD for once. I imagine it was stunted a bit from the stress, but it is also weirder looking in general.
Some photos of the "burn" (Is this potassium excess?) on GSC. It is on the two oldest leaves plus the tips of the cotyledons
Here are the plants overall. The flash makes the new growth appear a bit yellow but it looks better under regular lighting to me.
Day 27 Veg
All caught up now.
GSC was flushed yesterday (12 hours ago) and fed lower EC. BD I fed slightly lower as well just in case but no flush. One of GSC's leaves looks a bit bendy and the serrations point upwards more strongly than I am sure is ok, so I am also wondering if something else is going on or if that's just what the strain looks like. So far it has grown in a bit differently than BD which is very clean/smooth looking. Continuing to monitor for now.
Took the photos out of the tent for more accurate color.
My next fertigation is prepared at pH 5.93 ppm 1169 EC 2.28 but thinking of diluting it to make sure the issue doesn't progress for GSC.
Still foliar feeding daily once in the dark. Will be waiting for my moisture meter to reach the highest point of dry before watering to run-off as is my usual so far, which has been every 2 days about.
Waiting a bit more for next fertigation. Rechecking in 12 hours to see where the moisture is at. No progression on GSC issue from a few days ago. It's a possibility that the tips were laying in moisture after a foliar spray from the weight as GSC is shorter and bushier than BD.
Starting with the next watering will add the nutrient feed and runoff parameters to the log.
Will be adding another light tomorrow and see how they do. My growth seems really (really) behind most others logs I've read, but hoping it was the jump from jiffy pot straight to 5gal that's got them slowed down. Not in a rush though and they seem reasonably healthy.
Fertigated today and lowered the light a few inches. It's at about 23" now. Cheap light meter reading is at 500. Was very low prior, maybe 300 at the highest, but a second light should help. Hoping to see some faster growth after the change.
Edit: Plants were flushed with some pH adjusted water after some advice and fed at a lower EC.
GSC drooping. Leaving her be and giving time as the plants are dealing with additional light/heat (140W x2 on Veg setting) during day and the high EC, as well as cold temps overnight last night. The droop improved a little bit once the lights were on a few hours. Will flush again on the next fertigation. For now, just observing.
Fertigation was done today. EC has gone up even more since the previous runoff 3 days ago. I think maybe it had dried too much but the media was dry on top, moist through middle, and wet on bottom. Will try every 2 days with low EC fertigation instead of 3 and see if it starts dropping. I was reading that more frequent events can help keep it down.
I also look to have a lot of salt deposits on the fabric bag and wonder if it is altering my runoff results but will see again in 2 days how it is looking.
GSC was drooping again even after 5 hrs of light but perked up right after the watering. So it's making me lean more towards a 2 day watering cycle being an improvement.
Both have started to become more fragrant (GSC much moreso).
Here's the salt buildup on the bags from 5 days ago. I had wiped it off a few times. I also had rinsed the coco in these same bags so maybe a contributor? Trying to figure it out as I go.
Waiting for a bit more growth on the 6th nodes and better parameters before I top them both. Both are just in the beginnings of their 7th and 8th nodes so not enough space to do it yet. The plan is to top to the 6th on both. Just praying they are patient with me while I get the runoff under control.
BD starting to show what I am assuming is burn from the high EC as well as some drooping tips. I think some tips were also resting on the surface of the media when it was wet. Going to try to get that down by at least half on tomorrow's watering. Maybe half the EC on the in and double the volume and see how it goes. Hoping it is a bit dryer by then.
Did a flush on both today after some very (ridiculously) high ECs still coming through. Next fertigation will be 600 EC as it was up slightly in the runoff and will recheck if all is in line. It would seem a combo of way too high EC on my feed and I think letting the media dry too much. Evaporation salts I guess can bring it up really fast.
So moving forward with every other day waterings and updating the feed based on the runoff.
I didn't measure runoff volume as they basically got drowned to get the EC down and out of the media, so a lot came through.
Both showing the nutrient stress, moreso BD now than GSC, but BD also had much higher EC. (Droopy tips, yellowing edges)
They both stink and are mildy irritating on the allergies 🙃
