NYGC Coco: Two auto flower in coco

Hello CFC,

Looking forward to this year's NYGC. Been growing for about 3 1/2 years now but only beginning to feel confident in my techniques. My last cycle (Sour Diesel auto, Gelato auto) was a big boost. Harvested 2g short of a full 15oz (12oz hung to dry and another 3oz loose).

Think the best move made was really listening to and studying the information put out by the breeder about how to grow his plants. The big key thing was defoliating to open up the flower sites to let in the light. Basically because in coco we fertigate with every watering, the plants don't need the fan leaves to store nutrients during flowering. The other big thing was stop worrying about getting too tall and stop topping the plants. There was something wrong with my first purchase of seeds. They were irradiated at customs or something. Those seeds produce these 6ft gangly trees that grew every direction and were completely unmanageable. They'd take 14 to 16 week's to produce just an ounce or two. Not a problem since buying seeds here in the states.

Can't wait to share some of the things I've been doing. Looking forward to any improvements people will share with me during this grow. Have a great Christmas and will see you on the NewYear.

Been a long while since last posting anything on a site so the pictures may be a bit mixed up.

First, my shepherd and I look at what needs to be done.

Cannabis Grow 20211228 094725

Then everything easily removed is taken out of the tent and the tent gets a good spray down with bleach/water.

Cannabis Grow 20211228 100505

Once the tent gets a good wipe down after being sprayed, it's left to dry. When wiping it down, my idea is to get a good coverage with the bleach/water to let it disinfect whatever might be on the surface.

While the tent dries, Panzer and I get set up for the coco rinse.

Cannabis Grow 20211228 104415

When the coco is first put into the water to soak, it's broken up into little one inch chunks (or so). I work with it till it looks kind of like meatball marinara sauce.

Cannabis Grow 20211228 093254

This greatly speeds up the soak. Then the coco is strained and rinsed until the long fibers are left.

Cannabis Grow 20211228 110556

This is what you get rid of.

The grow environment has had a few updates since the early days.

The tent is 4'x4'x6'. After the fiasco with my first trees that had to be topped and supercropped just to keep them in the 2'x4'x5' tent, the floor space doubled and added a foot in height. (Didn't included tent picture since it's just a black box.) Recently upgraded my LED fixtures to VIPARSpectra XS1000. That really made a difference in production. Previous cycle of growing the same strains with the old LED fixtures got just over 4.5 ounces from two plants, the most recent cycle produced just under 15 ounces.

Also have added automatic watering controlled on a timer. Only addition I added to what's recommended on site is a solenoid on the barrel output to prevent siphoning issue.

Cannabis Grow 20211229 100713

For each plant node, one of my best friends in this, the 12 gallon tote from Big Orange.

Cannabis Grow 20211229 101147

Each node has an oscillating fan attached. Water lines from the barrel to each node. Grates supported by 2x4s to set the plants on allowing good drainage. To dewater each node there's been a drain fashioned in one end and that drain its connected to a 12V pump. The pumps are controlled by switches on a panel at the top of the tent. Have to dewater at least every 3 days to prevent the girls from getting wet feet.

The exhaust fan is now a 6" fan remotely mounted to allow more room in the tent. Use an old carbon filter on the fan exhaust to filter some of the noise but will eventually build a muffler box for it as well. It's still very loud when down in the basement to do anything.

While the seeds germinate, final prep is done

Finished the coco soak. Some would suggest rinsing again after the second soak but not rinsing hasn't caused me any set backs (that I'm aware of). In the few years I've been growing there's only been one plant that didn't make it and that was due to a 3 day interruption right as the girls were poking their heads out. Our basement began leaking water from heavy rains last fall. By the time the dust settled and the tent was unburied, one of the girls just couldn't be brought back.

Anyway using one of the 12gal totes, an old pyrex one quart measuring cup and one of my big wooden spoons; the coco and perlite get mixed together.

Cannabis Grow 20211231 125418

(If you'll notice there are no measuring lines on the measuring cup. Over the times of scooping, the perlite has scoured off the painted lines and my wife got a new set of Pyrex measuring cups for Christmas.)

Oops, didn't know you can't edit in photos.

So with everything in the tote, the perlite and coco are mixed really well.

Finally to end up in a new fabric pot. Early on the fabric pots were recycled but the plants never really seemed to do as good as when they were planted in a nice fresh pot. (Again those times were when still planting seeds from overseas.) Last year purchased a pack of 20 no-name fabric pots for about $15, less than a buck a pot. At that price I just grab a new one each time.

(Edit 1/20/22: checked the prices and now it's almost $30 for the same quantity. Still cheap enough.)

By using new pots, the tops of them are easily rolled down so as to not interfere with the water line/halo.

Prep is done, let's see if the girls are ready to move in.

Got the tent preps done last night before grilling steaks.  Looks as good as it can.

Cannabis Grow 20211231 190448

So the seeds germinated for just over 48hrs. When checked both had popped. The Strawberry Pie exploded. It was completely out of its husk and developing its first leaves. The Amnesia Haze was more of what was expected. She had a nice 3/8" to 1/2" tail.

(Edit 1/20/22: forgot to say that all I grow now is autos from Fast Buds, they seem to be very stable genetics.)

Cannabis Grow 20220101 102053

Cannabis Grow 20220101 102107

Using an old tablet stylus with a line marked for depth, a hole is made in the center of the pot and the seeds are dropped.

Cannabis Grow 20220101 102607
Cannabis Grow 20220101 102620

Cover over the seeds with just a little coco/perlite. I like to take a little water in a heavily saturated paper towel (not dripping) and squeeze that out over the top of the seed. Then place humidity dome over the seed and wait for her to surface.

Cannabis Grow 20211231 191017
Cannabis Grow 20220101 103105
Cannabis Grow 20220101 103028

The lights are on right now 24/7 at about 25% intensity and the fixtures are as high as they go. Once the girls are up, the domes get removed and start acclimating them to the light. During the next several days the fixtures get dropped, the intensity goes up slowly and the light period will get changed to 18/6.

See you then.

Both girls have said hello top the world.

So both girls have popped the surface.

Cannabis Grow 20220104 132403
Cannabis Grow 20220104 132353

Have lowered the lights about 8". Removed the domes. Turned the fans to point upward. Don't want to blow these little darlings off their feet but want the air to circulate well.

Cannabis Grow 20220104 132656

For the first couple days they'll get just plain well water. Once they've had a good soaking, then move them on to seedling nutes.

Cannabis Grow 20220104 134717
Cannabis Grow 20220104 133639
Cannabis Grow 20220104 133700

A day after that, the lights will get lowered the last 8" or so, to leave them about 24" above the girls at about 40% intensity. Leave the lights there for about a week and then crank up the intensity to 60% for about a week and finally make the last intensity jump to 100%.

Best laid plans of mice and men.

Tonight the girls will get their first taste of seedling nutes.

Cannabis Grow 20220106 195104
Cannabis Grow 20220106 195024

Have to say that it's always been a struggle for me to hit the target EC on the seedling mix. Used to be that my concern was so great, there'd be mixing of plain Ph'd water to dilute what had been mixed of the nutes trying to mix it down without ruining the mix. Now instead of double the EC, it's down to within a couple hundred points but is always high.

Anyway, instead of following my original plan to wait another 24-48hrs to lower the light into final position (for a couple of weeks), went ahead and moved it tonight. The Amnesia Haze seems to be really stretching for the light so decided to make the move now.

Finished with first week nutes and the girls look good.

When the tent was opened today, found there'd been a leak. It was slow but constant. The drain tote hose connection at the pump found to be crossed threaded. I know better than use metal fittings on plastic threads but it was all I could find at the time. After inspecting both pumps, found that the discharge hose connection on the other pump also cross threaded. Now the pumps have to be replaced.

(Of course, tried to rig the hoses. No joy.)

As for the girls, they're looking good.  The light got turned up today to 60% intensity. They'll get early veg nutes starting this afternoon. Adjusted the fans to blow a little more directly on the girls.  All in all, things are good with the grow.

Lowered lights in prep for Thursday

Lowered the lights to about 20" above the canopy today. You can begin to see the height difference already. The sativa (Amnesia Haze) is a couple inches taller than the indica (Strawberry Pie). This will get the girls acclimated to the new height before cranking the intensity up to 100% on Thursday. Thursdays are basically the first day of the week for me because that's the day the girls got their first nutes.

Since this is only my second cycle with these LED fixtures, I'm still following the manufacturer's suggested heights. Use an old hardware store yard stick with the key measurements marked on it. Last cycle used a standard retractable measuring tape that worked ok when it could be kept locked. The yard stick works much better.

Today is a big transitional day. The girls got their first taste of 100% intensity @ 20"above the canopy. Hung a new filter.  Switched out the 6" halos for the 9" ones.  And of course mixed up nutes. Both girls are doing great. We'll see how it goes, their training may start soon.

Oh yes, got the pumps fixed. Fortunately was able to replace the nylon housing on the pumps. I finally remembered what happened for me to use the brass fittings that caused all the problem. The pump manufacturer has proprietary fittings that are $10 each and I paid $10 for all the brass ones. Tried to be too cheap.

Also kind of started on muffling the fan output. Took the box the new fan came in and put that around the filter on the output. Knocked the decibels down a good bit already.

BIG congrats to Dr. Coco and the staff at Cocoforcannabis.com

Want to say thanks for all the folks here at Cocoforcannabis.com. @dr-coco, @drphoton both had really good articles posted 3+years ago and everything available was read and so on... but someone asked a question here the other day and I made reference to it. So, wanted to make sure you could still find the info easily and to my excitement, you guys have updated the info.

The fertigation article is the only one I've read so far but, it has validated some of the grow habits fallen into over time. I'm hungry for a day of studying. Thanks again for the hard work.

Started the girls education today.

Been keeping a close eye on the girls since lowering the lights. The sativa still hasn't developed a good truck yet but, her top is getting much broader. So broad, because the fans were lowered to blow more directly, she'd kind of blown sideways and her top was growing back to the light. Fortunately she needed a little training today.

These little horse shoes or loops are kept around for just this purpose.

Cannabis Grow 20220124 090649

After relieving the girls of their first nodes, the sativa got her second node pulled down and out. This also achieved a little more stability for that skinny little trunk  of her's. The nodes will get worked outward until they can be tied off to the pot.
