Grow Review: Black Widow by ILGM
Another addition to my outdoor summer garden. She was grown in a raised bed with living organic soil and boosted with compost tea and Roots Organic Terp Tea. The raised bed was fairly small, only 3x3 made out of 2x12s. I wanted to restrict the roots somewhat to keep her on the small side but she must have dug down deep because she was big. I can only imagine how treelike this plant would have become in the ground.
How Much Does Black Widow Stretch?
Wild and unruly! She just kept getting bigger. She started flowering later than her sisters by a few weeks and needed to be twisted into a bonsai tree to keep from becoming a tree.
Harvesting Black Widow
Her flowering period was wild! She was slow to start and for a long time I thought the buds were going to be small and of low quality. Mid to late July for the flowers to even start to form. Then about mid September they stacked into massive bulky colas and swelled up. I let her go until mid October when the buds were leaning into the ground and I observed about 20% amber. Definitely ready by then.
Drying, Trimming and Curing Black Widow
I cut off the fan leaves but left the sugar and dried it all in the shed for about 2 weeks. The buds then sat in a big tub for a month while I was at work and working on the dry trim. The tub was burped. Then into jars for the final cure. Totaled 29 oz dry after some culling of damaged buds.
The Flavor and Smell of Black Widow
Earthy I would say. The spice, the melange. Hint of leather? Those who smoke it say it tastes nice and smooth and the smoke makes you think someone is out there smoking some fire.
The Effects and Uses of Black Widow
It’s definitely a sativa, or has a very sativa leaning pheno in the genetics so it’s a bit racey I have heard. My GF likes it a lot and smokes it all day, saying it’s not over powerful.
My Overall Impressions of Black Widow by ILGM
Wow, what a ride. This plant was the apex of my growing, everything I have ever wanted out of growing a cannabis plant. First off, ILGM says Black Widow has an indica leaning pheno and a sativa leaning pheno. This was definitely the sativa one. Most notably, all the other plants in the summer garden were decimated by caterpillars and rain induced bud rot on top of that. But not this plant! Miraculously she was untouched by the caterpillars. I’m not sure why. Possibly it was that the buds were very airy until the final month and the BT was more effective. But still, she was rained on in September and very little rot! It’s a happy mystery. The plant was a monster. Pool cue of a stalk, flowers all over, big goober colas covered in trichomes. I have no clue if this plant was representative of this strain or if I just got very good luck with this particular seed but I have had some really good results from ILGM genetics so far.
