PTGC Architects: 🌿 Ethos - Cherry Gar-See-Ya - Fem/Photo

We kicked it off in my last journal with a poll to determine my PTGC strain, thanks for voting! I'm starting early because I want time for a back up! Seedlings are not my favorite. 🤣

Cannabis Grow Poll for S3

My plan is to top to node 3 from 6 or 7, then determine how much I need to delay the subsequent topping(s) for a 10/1 flip. I think this cultivar stretches a bit, so we may be culling a few prior to 10/1 based on growth and training.

The overnight seed soak was tap water and a few drops of Superthrive. EC 260 µs pH 6.8. Same solution for the Jiffy soak. I squeeze them out pretty good, I'd rather have to add freshly pH'd solution than have over-saturated peat pellets.

Four for five sprouted in a paper towel and sealed plastic container. Comment if you know what the root birth-mark is. It reminds me of a peanut casing inside the shell, but outside the nut.

Day 10 - Domes off. All counts are from seed soak for veg, actual start day.

No fertigations yet. Transplant of Jiffy pellet was done into tap-water-moist media. pH issue noted, helmet physical damage noted. I told them only the strong survive and zipped them up and walked away for a couple days.

My first fertigation was on day 12. ~16mL per day. Not fertigating to run-off until the cup is light for the first time. I will focus on fertigating circumferentially, as to not oversaturate the peat pellet in the center as nutrient solution can wick into the pellet.

Inflow: EC - 1.5 | pH - 6.2

Same mix, kept in the refrigerator + 1gtt pH down - added a pinch of Wallace Organic Mycorrhizal Inoculant.

In regards to the electrical conductivity of my nutrient solution, I am trying a standardized EC for seedlings. After inundating myself with grow operation walk through videos, I noticed that facilities are moving towards this high EC seedling strat, only to be adjusted for later in veg in preparation for flip, depending on whether vegetative or generative cues are more appropriate for that cultivar's stretch. It's all by the seat of my pants without a moisture content/substrate EC sensor, but conceptually this is how I think about it.

I really like FloraNova Grow (7-4-10) as a vegetative fertilizer, especially seedling. It really is an amazing one-part nutrient. FloraNova Bloom is also a wonderful nutrient, but conceptually I am not a fan of the near Lucas formula NER with all the stunning results and data at our fingertips pointing towards a cannabis-specific NER being best practice.

With that said, I have Jack's nutrients as well, and will swap over when FNG bottle runs out. I am equally impressed with Jack's 12-4-16 RO + MgSO4 veg fert, but I have not used it for seedlings yet. I went with what I knew this time.

Day 24

VPD: 0.67 (-7°F/-3.6°C leaf surface:ambient temp differential)
Inflow:
EC 1.5 pH 6.2
Outflow: Not enough sample
Fertigation Frequency:
2x Daily starting yesterday, fertigating to runoff, but only just - no outflow data yet.
LUX:

0.25mL Superthrive
FloraNova Grow to 1.5 EC
pH up to 6.2
0.25mL Floralicious Plus
Tiny pinch yucca
0.25mL Rapid Start

Feeling good. Nothing to report, except maybe some thoughts. When dryback time decreases to where 2x fertigations will no longer be sufficient, we will up-pot. Not quite there yet. Still thinking about pushing a touch more VPD. Or I may ride that 80F/26.7C|60% range until up-pot takes well. Rock on!

I need to do two things rather soon, up-pot and make the first topping. My coco has been rinsed, buffered, rinsed, soaked in nutrient solution, and will be put into the pots wet to drip a while. The perlite went along for the buffer after rinsing that awful dust off; also reducing perlite to 15% to increase media field capacity, or volume of nutrient solution it can hold. The transplant will receive some potions directly on the roots, stay tuned. After up-potting to 1.6gal air pots, I will top, keeping just the two main shoots to build from there, removing all lower nodes.

In regards to runoff EC. I will make adjustments, but won't be chasing a strict outflow EC range, unless visible detriment to the plant.

Hole dusted with Recharge, Azospirillium, Wallace Mycorrhizae, and Indole-3-Butyric Acid. Will let the up-pot take for a day or two and clip the tops off. I have already removed growth tips from nodes 1 & 2. This PB1000 LED board cannot properly veg all 5 plants, but will keep them alive and well while I wait to chop and dry the Wedding Cake in the 4x4.

Day 41 - Hello Ladies!

I am very excite for two reasons. One, the growth in two days! Wow, looks like some ladies just woke up! Two, the stem rub is turning skunky, very skunky - most pungently on the faster growing, stretchier plant - front right. I'll top again at the second node past manifold, removing growth tips from the first. I'll allow more nodes to grow and do another multi node chop as my stalling technique for 10/1 flip. I want my 3rd topping to be no later than 9/25. Considering monosilicic acid & 10-30-20 foliar during flip!

VPD: 0.89
Inflow: EC 2 pH 5.8
Outflow: Insufficient sample size
Fertigation Frequency/Volume: Once Daily - 600mL
LUX: 24k from 50% to 60% on PB4000; 36"/91cm roughly hang height

In 3 Gal RO
2mL Power Si
pH up to 6 from 3.2
22g 12-4-16 RO - Normally 18.9g full strength 2.1EC, but I've noticed my dry salts taking on a bit of water, reducing EC per gram.
3g MgSO4
3mL CaliMagic - I likely do not need this at all, and will half or remove the dose altogether next mix. Wasted EC in this setup, simply precautionary.
pH up to 5.8 from 4.0
1.5mL Superthrive
1.5mL Jumpstart
3mL Floralicious Plus

Day 44 - 2nd Topping. LST Clips came off after about 36 hours. Going to delay 3rd topping to stay on track. Still keeping 25k LUX, which is an intentional limiting factor due to timeline. I'll give a larger volume feed to wash the leftover salts out soon. 2.0 EC, no meaningful runoff volume yet, pretty interesting stuff to not see tip burn.

Good news, dry is near completion, so I get my 4x4 back and can prep for flip the last 15 days of September in the bigger tent. I am likely flowering 4 of these gals and keep one in case I'd like to run it again. There is one mongoloid grower of the 5 (20% more growth), I may keep that one back as to even the pack. See you guys in your grows. Just enjoying the pace of things, here; not too slow, not too fast. 🥂

Day 47 - A little boo-boo. I was spreading out the new growth a bit and snapped off the 1/4 of the growth on the largest plant. It was hanging by a thread, so I placed it back and loosely tied it to the adjacent nub. Still alive after a day! I should back off on the PowerSi to allow more malleable growth for training in the future. I am pleased, however, at the retention of the shape made by the LST clips, where with ArmorSi they would have straightened out on me pretty quick. I'm thinking a proper dose could be around 0.2 mL/gal, early.

VPD: 0.91
Inflow: EC 2.1 pH 5.8
Outflow: I did fert to runoff today, but did not measure EC/pH.
Fertigation Frequency/Volume: Once Daily - 1200 mL - today I'll add a 250mL shot 2 hours before lights off to get back on track and start 2x fertigations daily.
LUX: 25k (higher hang height @ 80% to even out the distribution)

In 3 Gal RO
2mL Power Si
pH up to 6 from 3.2
26g 12-4-16 RO
3g MgSO4
pH up to 5.8 from 4.0
1.5mL Superthrive

3mL Floralicious Plus
Small pinch yucca

1/2 tsp Wallace Humic Fulvic Kelp

A few sprays of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bionide) topically to the substrate.  Fungus gnats are still around, but not much longer for the year. None in the tent, just testing out the spray and being prophylactic.

Day 53 - A few more mistakes, a cull, 3rd topping, and rotating LST clips + pinching and bending. I should have topped a bit sooner, the secondary shoots [future main tops] were getting a little bit stretchy under the main growth. These leaves are quite big.

I did end up culling one of the five, I wasn't happy with the new growth tips on that plant, they would grow down first, then up. Also - permanent taco leaves, healthy looking, but taco all the time - oh well it's gone. You'll also see some tops missing, ya, that was me 😎. A couple of plants still have all of their original tops at least 🤣😆. Mistakes included, I couldn't be happier with the current circumstances. Learning sticks so much better when you're hands on.

I have been using a very generative [long dryback time, usually greater substrate EC, more stressful] fertigation cycle of once per day, still not measuring runoff EC, but I would guess about 3 EC. The alternative would be higher frequency fertigation, but at this time, I do not want the explosive growth of a more vegetatively cued fertigation cycle [keeping the substrate wetter, shorter dryback times, usually lesser substrate EC, less stressful]. I will likely continue a generative fertigation cycle throughout stretch as well, allowing further substrate EC spikes in hopes to curtail internodal elongation. Monosilicic Acid foliar planned for 10/1 as well. I'll need to research the schedule and what has worked for folks. We going PGR style boyz 'n girlz! Well at least in Oklahoma that's what the state would call it.

Day 64 - Auto fertigate, up-pot, & change of scenery. I've been working to turn over the tent and getting ready for flip day. I have a new reservoir, pump & halos, and have landed on once per week, hand-fertigated bennies with a very simple, sterile mix in the reservoir. For the auto fertigation system, I decided to go with a 330 gph pump that I already had, and Hydro Hat 6" halos. I put together some self draining saucers from the guide here and used everything suggested for those, and Hydrofarm 1/2" tubing for irrigation with a pressure regulating loop with 1/2" tees for each plant. For the reservoir, I am using the AAPW-1000 with included venturi for stirring and aeration [YouTube Link of the res in action] in a 20gal Lowes trash can. I also have the Wifi Inkbird pair, so now I can automate day and night RH% and T.

So I have these beautiful mature plants with nice roots, albeit overgrown for my preference as I am learning exactly what I want, and I have heard the cultivar is prone to gain quite a bit of height during the bolting period. I just sacked 12"/30.5cm of height raising my plants up for ease of water level and draining. So what's the plan? It is the PTGC after all - a little chiropractic adjustment and a scrog net. Then, the multi-pronged attack to limit plant height and internode distance by reducing my daytime temp 75°F/24°C and increasing my nighttime temp to 82°F/28°C, planned foliar sprays (Jack's 10-30-20, MSA, Yucca), and providing generative fertigation cues (10-30-20 to root zone for a week at flip). Thanks @DrCoco for clearing up bolt vs stretch for us all on GWMFG - CheapHomeGrow podcast recently.

VPD: 0.84
Inflow: EC 2 pH 5.8
Outflow: Not measuring.
Fertigation Frequency/Volume: (Couldn't help myself - had to go with vegetative cues to see them explode!) 5x daily, supervised. Not on timer yet. ~10 seconds duration per event which gives them about 7 seconds of water. I don't know the volume, but I get the smallest amount of runoff at 2nd fert and a small amount more on the subsequent fertigations for the day.
LUX: 30k

12mL Power Si

95g 12-4-16 RO

pH up to 5.8
